When to email your list

If you use email to communicate with your clients, when is a good time to send the email?  I've heard some say that emails should be sent Tuesday morning.  Others have said that the email solution should determine when a person most frequently opens the email and adjust the day of week and time to match the individual.

The real answer is that there is no answer.  Situations vary.  And it is necessary to do some tests to see what works best.  Here are some factors that would affect the effectiveness of emails to your clients.

Personal or Business Email?

Which email do you have?  Are you sending email to their personal address or business email.  If it's business email, normal business hours might be more effective.  If you have your customer's personal email address, after hours might be a better choice.

Time of Day

The time of day might be important if you are sending email to a person that gets huge volumes of email.  Email programs tend to put the most recent emails at the top.  If possible, try to send the email just before they would normally start looking at email.  Let's assume the person starts work at 9 AM.  If you send the email at 8:45, then the chances they would see your email first.

Day of Week

They day of week can be a big factor.  Should you send the email on Monday or Friday?  There is no specific answer.  You should test to see what works best for your list.

Conclusion

Try different times of day and days of the week.  See what works best.  Keep testing and measuring the response.

When I talk about email marketing, I am talking about permission based email.  These would be emails that your customers sign up to receive.  Stay away from purchasing email address lists or sending mass email lists.  They do not work.
