Yahoo lost its mojo

I recently took a look at the Yahoo corporate blog.  Sometimes it features some interesting things.  Randomly, I decided to click on the "cool" link.  This is like a mini-search which brings up blog posts related to that keyword.  The first two posts were about the Clinton global initiative and Yahoo's green data center.

I almost gagged.  This is what is considered cool?  By who?  Maybe in some alternate universe, a data center is cool.  But not in this one.  Bill Clinton is cool?  I like Bill Clinton.  But I'd never associate him with cool.

This illustrates how uncool Yahoo has become.  Yahoo has lost its mojo.  And I'm not sure what it has to do to bring it back.  It certainly has to stop trying to make data centers and Bill Clinton seem cool.

Here are some suggestions. 

  1. Stop trying to "me too" all the time.
  2. Innovate something insane.  Yahoo has to try to push the envelope. Take some darn risk.
  3. Help people connect and communicate.
  4. Make the tools seamless and easy to use.
